This holiday, known as "Guóqìng Jié" (国庆节) in Chinese, is one of the most significant annual celebrations in China. It marks the formal proclamation of the PRC by Chairman Mao Zedong on October 1st, 1949, at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The week-long holiday, often called "Golden Week," is a time for family reunions, travel, and national pride.
Major cities are adorned with red flags and vibrant floral displays, and a grand military parade is sometimes held in the capital on significant anniversaries (e.g., the 70th in 2019), showcasing the country's development.
