Chinese New Year, also widely known as Spring Festival, is definitely the most important traditional holiday celebrated in China. And the significant part of the Chinese New Year is the celebration of the eve, also known as Chuxi (除夕) in Chinese, I think it's kind of like Christmas Eve.
Chinese New Year's Eve holds a very special place in the hearts of Chinese people. It is the last day of the lunar year and is filled with rich history and vibrant traditions.
The origin of Chinese New Year's Eve can be tracked back to ancient times when people believed that there was a fierce monster named Nian would visit the places where human lives on this day.
Monster Nian would come out to harm people. However, people discovered that Nian was afraid of the color red, loud noises, and fire.

So, to keep themselves safe, they started to paste red couplets, stay up late and set off firecrackers, and light fires to scare away the monster.
The tradition has been passed down from generation to generation, and gradually evolved into the celebration we know today, and it becomes an essential part of Chinese culture.
Chinese New Year's Eve is the time for family reunions. Families, no matter where they are in the world, would return to their hometowns or come together for a grand reunion dinner, spending the evening with their loved ones.

After dinner, many families will stay up late to welcome the Chinese new year, which is a tradition called "Shou Sui" in Chinese. People believe that staying up late on this night can bring good luck and longevity.
Actually in the daytime of Chinese New year Eve, many traditional customs and activities take place. For example, people would decorate their homes with red lanterns, spring couplets which is also red, and auspicious decorations.
The color red, considered a lucky color in Chinese culture, representing happiness and good fortune, can be seen everywhere during the Chinese New Year. Many people would also dress in red clothes to celebrate the occasion.

Another common activity during Chinese New year Eve is giving red envelopes filled with money to children and seniors as a symbol of good wishes. And every child is so happy to receive a red envelope, which is also called "hongbao(红包)"in Chinese.
Fireworks and firecrackers are set off at midnight, creating a loud and spectacular display of lights and sounds in the sky, which is so spectacular.

However, to prevent the air pollution, setting off of fireworks and firecrackers is prohibited in most cities in China now.
Chinese New Year's Eve is not only a traditional holiday but also a time for Chinese people to get together and express their gratitude, love, and wishes towards their families and friends.
